Abstract:

New  Directions in Medical Ultrasound

Traditional  diagnostic ultrasound has evolved from a simple anatomical imaging tool to a  sophisticated technology that involves quantifying tissue properties from  molecular level to the organ level. Many diseases cause microscopic changes in  tissue that are manifested in alteration of tissue’s mechanical properties, such  as viscosity and elasticity parameters. Ultrasonic methods for measurements of  these parameters are of great interest because ultrasound is noninvasive and can  be used to make measurements at sufficient depths in body. Here, we present two  new modalities that use ultrasound in different ways: (a) non-invasive  evaluation of bladder compliance in patients with neurogenic bladders, and (b)  differentiation of suspicious breast masses based on slow deformation rate. We  will show the results of these studies on patients and discuss how these results  are supported by clinical data. Finally, we will discuss possible future  advances in these and other medical ultrasound research areas.

 

Biography:

Mostafa  Fatemi received  his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. Currently, he  is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Department of Physiology and  Biomedical Engineering of Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, MN. Dr.  Fatemi has been awarded Fellow membership by these institutions: Institute of  Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), American Institute of Medical and  Biological Engineering (AIMBE), Acoustical Society of America (ASA), and  American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM).

Dr.  Fatemi is a recipient of the IEEE-UFFC Distinguished Lecturer award for  2016-2017
